Since the 1970s the asset management industry has grown handsomely by managing the savings of the Boomer generation. The coming generation will inherit the wealth of their Boomer parents. But younger investors will also intensify the rising costs and downward pressure asset managers are now facing on fees, unless asset managers are prepared to transform their operating models. Gen Z and Millennials have a marked preference for lower-margin passive investing. They want investment products that reflect their personal values, especially on environmental and social issues. They are immune to the advice-heavy, fee-loaded, highly intermediated distribution strategies that have driven the growth of the asset management industry. The asset managers that sell successfully to this demographic will integrate blockchain and AI into their technology platforms, master digital distribution, on-boarding and communication and deliver individualised investment portfolios. Dominic Hobson, co-founder of Future of Finance, will be asking the panellists how asset managers can do what they need to do.
